La Crosse committee reviews contract between police SRO program and school district, as well as public comment – WIZM 92.3FM 1410AM
One of La Crosse’s two biggest committees meets on Tuesday, just over a week before the monthly city council meeting.
Part of the 6 p.m. Judicial and Financial Committee meeting at the Southside Neighborhood Center will be to review a contract for three School Resource Officers (SROs) – and one DARE agent – for La Crosse schools over the next year, at a cost of $ 150,000.
The meeting of the Judicial and Administrative Committee is open to participation in person and will also be held by videoconference by clicking here. To speak on an agenda item e-mail [email protected] or dial 608-789-7510 (press 5).
The committee will consider a 10-page memorandum (PDF) between the school district and the city police department.
At the same time, the committee will also consider two letters submitted by persons affected by parts of this memorandum.
A letter (PDF) discusses this lack of clear language about accountability for police conduct with members of the ORS Program Advisory Committee, which is made up of citizens and community volunteers.
The letter indicates a recent history of police retaliation against the department’s comments without the department addressing these cases.
Another letter sent (PDF) for the J&A committee comes from a parent of a student, also affected by the contract.
They would like to see clearer wording on actions to protect the advisory committee, as well as how police will react from inside the department if someone suffers retaliation.
They also ask the committee how the school will recruit and support volunteers from “marginalized backgrounds without process transparency” from the police.
