Dana secures long-term contract with Bosch to jointly develop and optimize the design and manufacturing processes of metal bipolar fuel cell plates
MAUMEE, Ohio, September 29, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Dana today announced that it has signed a long-term cooperation agreement with Robert Bosch GmbH to mass-produce metal bipolar plates for fuel cells. Dana’s licensed intellectual property will serve as the basis for companies to co-develop and co-produce the next generation of metal bipolar plates and drive excellence in manufacturing processes.
Dana’s metal bipolar plates are an integral part of the fuel cell and offer improved cost, performance and seamless assembly, helping OEMs achieve the commercialization of fuel cell powered mobility.
Bosch’s comprehensive fuel cell stacking system know-how will enable the two companies to further improve bipolar plate design for future generations in terms of cost competitiveness and performance. In addition, Bosch brings strong process competence to mass production, in particular the concepts of laser welding, testing and automation. This will support a successful start of serial production of bipolar plates.
To meet the growing market demand, the total production volume will exceed 100 million metal bipolar plates for Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America. The plates are expected to support fuel cell powertrains for commercial vehicle applications from 2022.
“Dana has innovated a revolutionary metal bipolar plate technology that helps customers deliver zero-emission fuel cell vehicles at a cost that enables market adoption today,” said Antonio Valencia, president of Dana Power Technologies and Global Electrification. “This agreement demonstrates our ability to provide a market-ready metal bipolar plate that eliminates traditional barriers of cost, complexity and performance, which is a critical step in the growth of the fuel cell market.
The highly durable bipolar plate is designed to meet the extreme demands of sealing, coating and absolute precision of extra-fine embossing structures.
In addition, Dana’s fully integrated high speed forming process further enables high volume production efficiency at lower cost as well as increased power density.
